Twenty years ago, starting a blog was basically like writing a public diary. Now, it’s more of an astute business decision. Pretty much every big business has its own blog and personal bloggers can make huge amounts of money. If you’re looking to start a blog, you need to understand that there is a lot of competition. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still make it. You just need to provide great content, consistently. Here’s how to start your own blog.

Decide what you want to blog about

The first thing you need to do is decide what you’re going to blog about. You might think that it’s a savvy business idea to find a profitable niche. For example, if you write blogs on dating, you can make a lot of money. However, it’s much better to choose a topic that you understand and can provide a unique angle. For example, if you’re a full-time mom that loves baking, you will be able to write on these subjects with more authority.

Research blogs in that niche

The next step is to research other blogs in your chosen niche. The research stage has a few key benefits. Firstly, it will give you an idea of what you’re up against. You will be able to see the quality of other writers and see if you can provide something different. Secondly, it will give you plenty of inspiration. You might see a content idea that you hadn’t considered and think of a fresh take on it.

Think about how you will structure your blog

Structure is important, especially if you want to build your blog as a business. You need to decide on categories and subcategories for your content. This will make it easier for readers to navigate the blog and find what they’re looking for. It will also make it easier for search engines to crawl your website.

Brainstorm blog post ideas

Before you start writing, you need to brainstorm a lot of blog post ideas. Hopefully, after your research, they should come flooding out. If they don’t, you might have picked the wrong niche. Then, when you’ve got a big list of ideas, you can perform some keyword research to see if any of your ideas have legs.

Write ten posts

Before you publish your blog, you should write 10 posts. This will allow you to post regularly in the first couple of weeks, as you fit writing into your life. Regular posting is essential for success.

Build your blog

Now, you’re ready to build your blog. WordPress is the most commonly used (and probably the best) website for blogs. Plus, it gives you all of the tools to create a domain name and host the website.

Email other bloggers

To build your audience, you should reach out to other bloggers. Create a professional email signature with and offer your services as a writer. Then, you can link back to your blog and start to increase traffic. This is called guest posting.

Think about how your blog will make money

Once you have enough followers, you can think about monetizing your blog. There are multiple ways to do this, including affiliate marketing and banner advertisements.

Alternatively, you can sell your blog to a company.
