Recipe:Best Sore Throat Cure

I get the occasional sore throat. I do breath through my mouth when I sleep at times. Sometimes it is that start of something. That feeling in my throat. Many times I have gone to the doctor for it. I am definitely one of those types. I go for EVERYTHING. Kinda makes my hubby crazy, but I figure I would rather have the peace of mind. Especially if it is anything to do with kiddos. I never second guess it.

Today was one of those nothing else wrong with me wake up with a sore throat days. Like my previous statement I usually will pop in to the Doc.  He always says the whole just rinse with saltwater thing. I nor the kiddos have luckily never tested positive for the yucky throat swab tests. So we do the sprays, rinses and such to make it through the sore throat. Today I decided I did not want to suffer all day. I don’t want to go to the Doc (yes I said it), It is summer I want to have fun. I really don’t have anything else wrong so I will try to work this one out myself.

(Disclamer here- this is my own personal journey here, if you or your kiddos are sick please take to the Doc! So with this in mind I sat at the computer and thought, OK so they always tell me to rinse and gargle with salt water a few times a day. I would think there are many holistic ways to help a sore throat. I read many different peoples views and even some people who claimed to be a naturopath say how different spices help sore throats.

Even some said this is what my Granny did with us for years. I know some of these things have to have a ring of truth. Heck that’s all people have sometimes is the spices and herbs, if they grew up on it, it cant be all that bad?  Heck I can even consider this tonic I plan to make a sort of soup or tea?

So I have made my own concoction of spices and mixed them up. I gargled half the mix and though it was not the best flavor I have ever tasted. Salty water is just so gross anyways.

After 5 min I am happy to report my throat DOES NOT HURT! Then after 15 min the tightness in my throat was gone. WOW!  There has to be something to these spices that well work.  I just wanted to know why. So my search continued.

One of the ingredients is Ginger.  What I found out about Ginger is:
Ginger is one of natures “antiviral herbs”.  It contains about a dozen or so antiviral compounds. Ginger is also a natural antiseptic and antioxidant. Many believe is can be useful for preventing and treating colds, sore throats and inflammation of mucus membranes. (hello that is what I wanted to hear) Ginger can be used to help reduce pain and fever. Some say it even can have a mild sedative effect that will encourage rest. (One thing Docs always say rest and fluids).

Salt is a *hyper-tonic solution (whoa Big words here) to the bacteria cells and draws all the water from bacteria, this will cause bacteria to die. Salt water minimises the bacterial growth and you feel better. Salt is a natural disinfectant so it can help to destroy those bad germs which can cause you to have an infection. The act itself of gargling will also loosens thick mucus and can help rid your throat of irritants like allergens, bacteria and fungi (EWWW). I even read in many places that gargeling with salt water helps reduce respritory and Flu symptoms. Salt water can improve circulation. This will increased the blood supply which provides you with more oxygen and faster healing.  Be sure to use the correct amount too much can actually make your throat feel more irritated! (dont want that!)
*Definition of Hyper-tonic solution Wiki- A hyper-tonic solution is a solution having a greater solute concentration than the cytosol. It contains a greater concentration of impermeable solutes on the external side of the membrane. When a cell’s cytoplasm is bathed in a hyper-tonic solution the water will be drawn into the solution and out of the cell by osmosis. If water molecules continue to diffuse out of the cell, it will cause the cell to shrink, or crenate. (basically it sucks out the water in the bad bugs and the buggies die)

Cayenne Pepper:
Cayenne can stimulate circulation to areas of the body, it warms the body this can stimulates the release of mucus from the respiratory passages (you know how you get runny nose from spicy food). Capsaicin in Cayenne pepper causes the warmth which can help block pain signals in the nerves. It can raise the body temperature a bit, as it stimulates circulation and blood flow when your blood flows the good white blood cells are ready to battle.

Tumeric (found in curry powder, this is what I used) Is used in many countries to treat inflamation and cancers. It is said to also have many antioxident properties. It is a natural antibiotic. (This is good news!)

Lemon Juice: Lemons can aid in cleaning the blood and liver and help reduce inflammation because the lemon is naturally acidic. Bacteria and viruses do not like to be in an acidic environment. The combination of lemon juice and the salt will increase the acidic levels which can kill many microorganisms. (the lemon juice helps make the mix taste better too- some people use  Cider vinigar. Obviously acidic properties also. I just choose to use the lemon cause I like it better)

GoodBelly Probiotic juice drink: Probiotics are good to use because 70% of the bodies immune system is in the digestive tract and when this gets off kilter you can start to feel sick. You need to have these “good bugs” in your system in order to be in balance and healthy. Plus I just gargled to kill some “Bad Bugs” in my throat, I want to replace them with the “Good Bugs”.

*So your lips do not feel the heat from the Cayenne, I put a whole bunch of chapstick on before I gargled! Worked like a charm*

Well now you know why I choose these ingredients this is the recipe for the mix I used

1/2 C very warm water

1 1/2 Tablespoon Lemon juice

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon turmeric (or curry powder)

1/4 teaspoon Cayenne powder  (not the flakes)

1/4 teaspoon ground Ginger

Mix all ingredients, let it steep for a few and gargle, repeat until you have gargled all the mixture.  I waited 10-15 minutes and drank the GoodBelly drink AFTER.

I continued to gargle a few times all day. To make sure all those bad bugs are history. I did feel so much better within minutes of the first rinse.  Even later I feel alot better and still no sore throat :)
